The ASP.NET Repeater Web Server Control
If you've been using ASP.NET for any length of time then you've almost certainly utilized the DataGrid Server Control. And I'm sure a good portion of you have probably played with the DataList as well... after all, not all of our tables can only have one item per row. But what about that other data web control? I've got a friend who probably will kill me for using this analogy, but it's sort of like the three tenors... there's Pavarotti, Domingo, and that other guy (his name is actually Carreras, but you get my point). Well the other guy in this case is a great little control called the Repeater. While the repeater may not be as well known as or have all the bells and whistles of the other controls, it does have something that neither of the other two has: flexibility.

Password Protecting Your Website, Part 1

Creating Usable Page Templates in ASP.NET
Pages in Web applications often share common UI components, such as headers, sidebars, and footers. Developers often seek to encapsulate these common components into a page template, which each page can consume and possibly customize. However, in ASP.NET, this can be a nightmare. This is because there is no blunt, intuitive way to structure an application to accomplish page templating. The task becomes even more complicated when pages are large and require nested user controls to organize them into manageable units.

This article shows you how to rise to the challenge of building an effective page templating scheme. As you will see, combining a Web Control that represents the template to the Web designer with a user control that contains the actual template code, you can achieve an elegant yet simple and reusable approach that's easy to maintain and takes full advantage of the ASP.NET framework. This approach becomes especially important when dealing with complex sites containing large data-driven pages that require page-level customization.

Migrating to ASP.NET
ASP was released to work on NT Server 4.0 in 1996 as a scripting language used to deliver dynamic content to web users. The take up of ASP has been significant over the past 6 years with a large proportion of dynamic sites now being written in this way.

ASP is very popular with developers and it has undoubtedly brought many benefits to websites. However, it is now an older technology and is being replaced by ASP.Net. .Net has all the benefits of ASP, together with improved security, scalability, reliability, flexibility and interoperability of applications.

Creating a Popup Date Picker
Recently, I was working on a Web Form and I wanted to give users an easy way to enter a date into a TextBox control. Back in the days of Classic ASP, I frequently used a small ASP page, opened in a popup window, to display a calendar. Users could go to the previous/next month, and when a date was clicked, the selected date would populate the input field via some basic JavaScript.

But we're in the .NET world now. I wanted to come up with an easy way to do this that would rely on the rich controls that Microsoft included with ASP.NET. After a quick trip to Google, I found a solution; add a new EventHandler to the ASP.NET Calendar control's SelectionChanged event that emits the JavaScript needed to set the value of the TextBox.

Building a Basic Flash MX Page with ASP.NET and SQL Server
Within Flash MX, create a new Flash document by clicking File and then New. Next, adjust the properties to get the look and feel you desire. Using the Text tool (the "A" icon in the Tools box), create two Input Text text objects and within the Var property box, type the variable name you wish to call each. I used username and password in this project.

Create a button using the Rectangle tool. Right-click the button and choose Convert to Symbol. Name the symbol object and choose Button as the Behavior. Since we chose Button from the Convert to Symbol dialog box, we can give the button rollover properties if we wish. This is where just some of the power of Flash lies; you can attach compressed sound and any type of effect you can dream up, which is very cool. (For this particular article, we won't get into this functionality.)

ASP trouble

Hi, I have a problem with an .asp page I am trying to edit. I am new to working with asp. As a matter of fact, I understand very little about it. I had a webmaster that also hosted my site and that fell through so here I am trying to understand it. Everytime I edit any little thing on this page it gives me an error when published. ...
